Evaluation of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy at the Mn L2,3-edges as a potential probe for manganese redox state in natural silicates

چکیده
Determining the Mn valence variation at nanometer scale will be an important advance in study of heterogeneous natural silicates. Here, potential scanning transmission X-ray microscopy L2,3-edges (640–655 eV) as a probe for manganese redox state is evaluated. For this purpose, several Mn-silicates (rhodonite, ardennite, piemontite, Mn4+-silicate, jacobsite) were analysed to identify spectral parameters most sensitive valence, regardless coordination environment, crystal field strength, nature and length metal–ligand bonds, intra-atomic Coulomb spin–orbit interactions. Two suitable empirical calibrations are thus proposed, linking two peak intensity ratios: one ratio intensities from energy points L2 (at 651.7 655.2 eV), point L3 641.6 eV). Thank them, first quantitative maps constructed, with high spatial resolution (<40 nm pixel size), opening way exhaustive crystallochemical studies silicates containing different valences.

X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Probe Microscopy
Diffraction can occur when electromagnetic radiation interacts with a periodic structure whose repeat distance is about the same as the wavelength of the radiation. Visible light, for example, can be diffracted by a grating that contains scribed lines spaced only a few thousand angstroms apart, about the wavelength of visible light. X-rays have wavelengths on the order of angstroms, in the rang...

Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy (SHPM) is a scanning probe microscopy technique developed to observe and image magnetic fields locally. This method is based on application of the Hall Effect, supplied by a micro hall probe attached to the end of cantilever as a sensor. SHPM provides direct quantitative information on the magnetic state of a material and can also image magnetic induction under a...

متن کاملCombining scanning probe microscopy and x-ray spectroscopy
A new versatile tool, combining Shear Force Microscopy and X-Ray Spectroscopy was designed and constructed to obtain simultaneously surface topography and chemical mapping. Using a sharp optical fiber as microscope probe, it is possible to collect locally the visible luminescence of the sample. Results of tests on ZnO and on ZnWO4 thin layers are in perfect agreement with that obtained with oth...
